Health insurance companies duly authorized to operate in Ecuador (Prepaid Medical care)
On August 10, Official Registry No. 55 of the year 2017 was published, bringing into full effect the regulation to the Organic Law of Human Mobility (to read more about the new changes to the law click here). Among the provisions of this regulation is the requirement that foreigners with a residency visa, obtained before or after the publication of the Organic Law of Human Mobility on February 6th, 2017, must by law obtain public or private health insurance. Those who were granted a residency visa before February 6, 2017 have until the deadline of November 8, 2017 to present justification of having either private or public health insurance. While it is not specified whether the insurance should be Ecuadorian or international, the Superintendence of Companies has issued a warning to Ecuadorian and foreign citizens regarding the contracting of health insurance offered by foreign companies in Ecuador, related to their compliance with Ecuador’s laws on claims. You can read the resolution of the Superintendence of Companies here.
Subsequently, on July 21st, 2017 the Superintendence of Companies published an updated list of companies that offer health insurance services such as prepaid medicine, through resolution SCVS-INS-DNCTSR-2017-0018597-OC. This list has been included below for your reference.
