Whether or not to vote in Ecuador!


Expats: Voting in Ecuador:

Voting in Ecuador is an obligation for Ecuadorians from 18 to 65 years old living in the country. If you are not Ecuadorian and have been living in Ecuador for at least 5 years with a residency visa and cedula, you are allowed but not required to vote. To do so, you must be registered at the voters list in the city that you reside.

"Art. 11.- LEY ORGANICA ELECTORAL, CODIGO DE LA DEMOCRACIA

The voting right will be done according to the following disposition:

1. The vote will be mandatory for all the Ecuadorians over 18 years old, including those people in prison without a executed sentence. 2. The vote will be optional for people between the ages of 16 and 18 years old, over sixty five, and the Ecuadorians living abroad, the Armed Forces, National Police in active service, disabled citizens and illiterate citizens. It will also be optional for foreigners from 16 years old and up that has resided legally in the country for at least 5 years and are registered in the Electoral Register. "
